What Revenue Means (Gross vs Net)

Learn the difference between gross and net revenue in Tutonomi, including processing fees and refunds.

——— ••• ———

When you look at your payments in Tutonomi, you'll see two figures for each transaction: a gross amount and a net amount.

The gross amount is what your pupil was charged — the full lesson fee.

The net amount is what lands in your bank account after payment processing fees have been deducted. These fees are taken automatically at source, so you never need to calculate or transfer them yourself.

The difference between the two is the payment processing fee. This is charged by our payment partner for handling the card transaction securely.

You'll see both figures in the Payments table on your Billing page, and the net figure is what contributes to your Received and Total Earned totals on the Dashboard.

💡 Processing fees are tax deductible (whoop!)

As a business expense, payment processing fees can be offset against your tax bill. By the time you factor that in, the real cost is lower than it first appears — and in many cases, significantly so. It's worth mentioning this to your accountant if you haven't already.

Good to know

  • Payment processing fees are deducted automatically — there's nothing you need to do.

  • The gross amount is what you should quote pupils as your lesson fee. The net amount is your take-home after fees.

  • If you're ever unsure why a net amount looks lower than expected, check the gross figure in the same row to see the original charge.
